The Cleveland Browns and New York Giants have shocked NFL fans around the world last night as wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. was traded to the Browns in exchange for their first round (17th overall) pick in the upcoming draft, a third round selection, and safety Jabrill Peppers. Following one of the biggest trades in NFL history, many are wondering: What is next for the two franchises involved?
This blockbuster trade is a bit surprising considering Beckham was recently extended by the Giants with a five-year deal, worth $95 million. Following the extension, Giants GM Dave Gettleman reassured fans he would not have extended the receiver if he had plans to trade him.
Obviously, the Giants' stance on Beckham changed. Whether the Browns' offer was just too good to resist, or recent decisions made by the Giants altered their plans for the future, New York now appears to be in full rebuild mode after trading one of their most valuable players. The Giants were able to gain some valuable picks along with a promising defensive player. Depending on how the draft picks develop for the Giants, this trade can very well end up benefiting both sides. The Giants have a great opportunity to use their draft capital on a quarterback to be Eli Manning’s successor, while also be able to address several other positions of need on their roster. The Giants could use an upgrade at almost every single position (besides running back, where Saquon Barkley will be one of the few bright spots left on the team).
On the other side of the trade are the Cleveland Browns, while having a winless season just two-years ago, appear to be completely rebuilt and ready to contend. The Odell Beckham trade, as well as the other moves made by Cleveland so far this offseason, indicates they are ready to win now. Odell Beckham Jr. will play alongside WRs Jarvis Landry and Antonio Callaway, TE David Njoku, and RBs Kareem Hunt and Nick Chubb. This revamped offense is perhaps one of the best offensive unite in the league, and will help second year quarterback Baker Mayfield, as he looks to build off of his breakout rookie season. All of a sudden, the Cleveland Browns are one of the most talented teams in the league on paper, and appear ready to make a deep run into the playoffs.
Keep in mind there is a good chance Beckham requests a larger contract from Cleveland. However, this should not be an issue as the Browns are most likely ready to make ‘OBJ’ the highest paid receiver in the league. It is safe to say, all eyes will be on Odell Beckham Jr., Baker Mayfield, and the Browns this upcoming season, as they look to have put together perhaps the greatest turnaround in NFL history.
