The Alliance of American Football (AAF) has suspended all football operations, and their future looks to be in doubt. This announcement came just eight weeks into the AAF’s inaugural season, and was a surprise for many. With just two weeks left in the season, it is unlikely we will see anymore AAF from this year. Every operation, including practices have been cancelled after majority-owner Tom Dundon made the decision to discontinue the league. The announcement came to a disappointment to many, as there were just two weeks left in the league's first regular season.
The AAF’s first season kicked off this past February, and caught the attention of football fans around the US. The AAF provided fans a chance to watch football during the NFL offseason. They also officiated their games differently from the NFL, which many believed to improve the overall game. The games brought in consistent ratings, both on television and in the stadium. The league also featured some former NFL players such as Trent Richardson and Johnny Manziel who also added to the hype. around the league.
The AAF had plenty of potential, but starting a league is no easy task. Teams and players lack any form of chemistry. With only eight teams across the country, it was difficult to gain a large following, and the majority of players were not well known. The inexperience lead to some poorly-played games that were difficult to watch. At the end of the day, the AAF was not making enough profit for their majority-owner. Tom Dundon, who invested $70 million suspended the league for reasons not yet clear, but some assume that he simply did not have enough patience to wait for the league to become more profitable. While this suspension does not mean a certain folding of the AAF will occur, it indicates the end may be very soon.
Although the AAF’s future does not look bright, it is very possible another football league could compete with the NFL in the near future. The Alliance showed potential that in time, a new football league could become successful. Football fans once again only have the NFL to fill their football needs, but the hype around the league will pick up soon as the draft approaches.
