American boxer Deontay Wilder started the weekend with some very controversial comments during a normal media conference. After a workout Wilder stated, “This isn’t a gentleman’s sport…This is the only sport where you can kill a man and get paid for it at the same time.” These comments got the WBC’s attention and discussed the comments with Wilder in a hearing. The event is what got everyone’s attention. Challenger Dominic Breazeale went into the match attempting to give Wilder his first loss with a 20-1 record. Wilder has a 40-0 record and went in looking to remain perfect. With the regarding history between the two, the fight was going to be special.
In less than a minute, the fight was over. After a bit of regular movement and a corner, Wilder unloaded and knocked out Breazeale with a right punch to the face. Breazeale fell right to the ground and after the ref counted to ten, he tried standing up, but then immediately stumbled to the ropes. Wilder knew as soon as he landed the punch that he had won. He ran to the ropes and started yelling with the fans and celebrating his win.
If we’re going back to Wilder’s comments, does he make some solid points? Boxing, the UFC and MMA all are extremely violent sports that have the potential of severely harming an athlete. The comments might have been harsh and hard for people to hear, but Wilder had a good point. These sports aren’t for a regular gentleman, they’re for athletes who love the adrenaline and fighting and getting paid for it.
